Artist Statement
These two things are common occurrences in our lives: the passing of time, and clouds. Clouds, in particular, are often looked over as we go through our lives because we’ve gotten used to their presence. Using cloud photographs as a conduit, I have created thought-provoking and meditative photographs depicting the passage of time through the different formations and times that they are taken. In combination with archival photographs that have been in my family for years, I allow the viewer to take a moment to look up at the sky, contemplate, and take a small step back from everything our lives demand from us. Through this body of work, and by digitizing film photographs, they are able to speak louder about the concepts of change and the passage of time alongside photographs of an ever-changing subject, clouds. Other artists that I am responding to are Alfred Stieglitz, Ralph Steiner, and Uta Barth. Through my research and inspiration from all three of these artists, I am proposing another tangible and personal layer in which we can note the changes in time - alongside archival imagery ranging from the mid-1900s to the present.
